The Toyota Aqua and the Nissan Note e-Power are two of the most popular Japanese import hybrid cars in Cyprus. Both are automatic, both are fuel-efficient, and both are regularly available in our Limassol showroom. But they are quite different cars.
This comparison will help you decide which is the right choice for your driving needs.
Toyota Aqua A compact hybrid hatchback built exclusively for the Japanese market (sold as Prius C outside Japan). It uses a conventional parallel hybrid system: the petrol engine and electric motor can both drive the wheels, switching between them automatically.
Nissan Note e-Power A compact hatchback with Nissan's unique series hybrid system. The petrol engine acts as a generator only the wheels are driven entirely by the electric motor. This gives it an EV-like driving feel without any plug-in charging.
Both are exceptional, but for different reasons.
The Toyota Aqua is slightly more fuel-efficient on longer motorway journeys, where the petrol engine can drive the wheels directly. The Nissan Note e-Power is more efficient in city driving, where the electric motor's instant torque and regenerative braking shine.
In Cyprus conditions a mix of city and motorway both are among the most economical cars you can buy. For accurate fuel economy on a specific car, speak to our team, as figures vary by year and trim.
Nissan Note e-Power wins for city driving.
Because the Note e-Power is driven entirely by an electric motor, the driving experience is notably different from a conventional car. Acceleration is instant and linear — there is no delay, no gear changes and almost no engine noise at low speeds. One-pedal driving (where lifting off the accelerator slows the car significantly through regenerative braking) reduces the need to use the brake pedal in city traffic.
The Toyota Aqua is smooth and refined but feels more like a conventional automatic car. The transition between electric and petrol power is seamless, but it lacks the pure electric-drive feel of the Note e-Power.
Verdict: If you have never driven an electric or e-Power car, a test drive in the Note e-Power is strongly recommended many buyers find it a revelation in city use.
Nissan Note wins for interior space.
The Note has always been known for packaging more interior space into a compact body than most competitors. Rear legroom and headroom are notably better than the Aqua. Boot space is also more generous.
The Aqua is more compact, which makes it easier to park in tight spaces a real advantage in Limassol and Nicosia city centres. But if you regularly carry rear passengers or need a large boot, the Note is the more practical choice.
Both cars come well-equipped in Japanese domestic market specification. The newer Note e-Power (2020+) has a clear edge in infotainment technology, with a larger touchscreen, digital instruments and Nissan's latest safety systems.
Japanese-spec Aqua models from 2021+ also feature updated technology including Toyota Safety Sense. Earlier Aqua models are simpler in equipment but have an excellent reliability track record.
Both are very reliable, but for different reasons.
The Toyota Aqua shares its hybrid drivetrain with the Prius one of the most proven hybrid systems in the world, with over 25 years of production and minimal powertrain issues. Toyota's reliability record in Cyprus is outstanding.
The Nissan Note e-Power is newer technology, but Nissan's e-Power system has been thoroughly tested in Japan's demanding traffic conditions since 2016. Early results are very positive the simplicity of the drivetrain (no complex gearbox, fewer moving parts) should translate to excellent long-term reliability.
